Golf

Spring Ford Country Club offers a championship golf experience rooted in a distinguished architectural legacy. Originally a nine-hole design by J. Franklin Meehan, the course was expanded to 18 holes by William Gordon, renowned for his work at Saucon Valley and Old York Road and his role in the historic renovations at Shinnecock Hills and The Country Club.

In the late 1990s, Gil Hanse guided a series of strategic enhancements that refined the course’s greens and bunker complexes. More recently, a renovation led by Tyler Rae further elevated playability and strategy while honoring the course’s classic character.

Opened in 1924 and set across the rolling landscape of Western Montgomery County, the course is a demanding yet rewarding test, with Mingo Creek influencing play on nine holes. Spring Ford’s quality has been recognized through its selection as host of the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship.

Golfers of all abilities are welcomed, with clinics, tournaments, and one of the region’s premier junior programs. Members enjoy unrestricted access with no required tee times, no additional fees for range use or handicaps, and walking always permitted.

Junior Golf

At Spring Ford Country Club, we believe the game of golf is best passed down through a strong and inspiring junior program. Our commitment to young players is reflected in a well-structured calendar of instruction, competition, and tradition—designed to build confident golfers and foster a lifelong love for the game. Whether your child is just getting started or already showing natural ability, SFCC offers a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment to help them thrive.

Instruction That Builds Strong Fundamentals

Each summer, SFCC hosts a series of instructional camps for boys and girls as young as six. Our teaching philosophy focuses on:

  • Proper swing fundamentals
  • Course etiquette and sportsmanship
  • Respect for the game's traditions

These elements give young golfers the foundation they need to progress year after year.

Competitive Opportunities Across the Region

SFCC juniors compete in the Junior Interclub series against peers from Cedarbrook, North Hills, Rivercrest, Indian Valley, Doylestown, and Brookside (Pottstown) Country Clubs. Many also earn invitations to the prestigious Merion Golf Club Junior Invitational, one of the region’s most respected junior tournaments.

Our impact extends beyond the club—local high school golf teams regularly feature SFCC junior members who developed their skills through our program.

A Proven Record of Success

Spring Ford’s junior program has produced exceptional results:

  • 2025 Merion Golf Club Junior Invitational – Team Champions
  • Nine Interclub Match Championships since the program’s launch in 2014, plus two runner-up finishes
  • Two GAP Junior Players of the Year:
    • 2017 – B. Pochet
    • 2018 – R. Tall
These achievements reflect the dedication of our juniors and the strength of our developmental approach.

A Full Season of Home-Course Events

Our juniors enjoy a busy schedule of intraclub tournaments throughout the season. These events allow young golfers to:

  • Test their skills under pressure
  • Learn competitive strategy
  • Apply the rules of golf
  • Build confidence on familiar fairways
It’s a fun, supportive way for players to grow both technically and mentally.

Superintendent

In 1985, as a sophomore at Henderson High School in West Chester, PA, Mark started as a groundskeeper at Whitford Country Club. After graduating from Henderson in 1987, it was off to Pennsylvania State University to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy to pursue a career in golf course maintenance. After graduation, Mark served as Golf Course Superintendent of Timber Trails Golf Club and as Assistant Maintenance Superintendent of Lake Naomi Club. In late 1994, Mark came to Spring Ford Country Club to work for and learn from Dana Getty, the club's veteran Superintendent. Upon Dana's retirement, Mark was promoted to the position of Golf Course Superintendent in January 1998. Mark celebrated thirty years at Spring Ford in 2024, the same year that the club celebrated its 100th year as a club

Mark served on the Board of Directors of Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents for a total of sixteen years. The first three years as a director, then he was elected as the Board Secretary, a position he held for thirteen years. During his time on the board, Mark represented the Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents as the Chapter Delegate and a Voting Delegate where he functioned as liaison between the local chapter and national association and cast the votes for PAGCS in national elections.

Preparing a golf course on a daily basis for the members and their guests can present many challenges, both planned and unexpected, but Mark looks forward to getting to the club every day to get the course ready for all to enjoy.
